About Pilates
Pilates is a total body work out that targets your deep tummy muscles (core) first unleashing better balance, posture, strength, and flexibility while keeping injuries at bay.
Pilates isn’t just a one-size-fits-all deal – it's like a fitness chameleon that can be modified and adapted to accommodate for different fitness levels, health considerations and exercise goals. It’s accessible whatever your age or ability! Whether you are a beginner or a top athlete (like footballer Ronaldo - yes, he’s done Pilates), Pilates can help you!
But it doesn’t just work these deep core muscles it also builds strength in your upper body, wrists, arms, bum, tum, pelvis legs & ankles. Aiming to make you a fortress of strength and resilience less likely to run into pain / injuries.
Pilates exercises teach you how to isolate different body areas increasing your rage of movement and enabling you to maximise the use of your body, great if you are looking to improve a favourite sport or hobby, as well as, supporting you move day to day and reducing your chance of stiffness.
It may be low impact but that doesn’t mean it is easy but instead accessible. Exercise movements are dynamic so you can strengthen and stretch your muscles at the same time.
Pilates isn’t just about moves; it's a whole body journey that taps into your breath, body and mind. Breathing patterns stimulate the vagus nerve, which is the nerve responsible for “rest & digest”, bringing a calming effect into your life. Add to this a sprinkle of exercise-induced endorphins, and voilà – a happier you awaits!
And it all begin with one man!
Joseph Pilates is the founder of Pilates. He was born in 1880 & through events in his lifetime the Pilates method was created.
There are two concepts in Pilates, machine work & matwork. Machine based Pilates uses concepts of matwork Pilates, as well as, spring loaded resistance machines (e.g. the reformer). Whereas, matwork is the original 34 movements Joseph created which are completed on an exercise mat.
